INTRODUCTION

This is an independent roleplay blog for the character MAGNUS BANE, from THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS I hold no affiliation with anyone involved with the show/novels. All graphics posted on this blog are mine, unless stated otherwise. This includes icons - so please don't claim them as your own.

PORTRAYAL

My depiction of Magnus is heavily based on the ongoing Freeform television series, as well as the Shadowhunter Chronicles novels, and my own headcanons. I consider myself to be a healthy blend of the three. If you aren't a fan of the way I play him, that's fine! I'm not asking you to love him, but if you don't, please keep any and all negative comments to yourself. This is my interpretation, and I will never claim to be as perfect as canon.
I will also not be impressed if you send me hate based on your opinion that the books are better than the television series, or vice versa. The clash between the two is silly, and I don't plan on adding any fuel to the fire.
While he has a similar personality to what is portrayed in canon, Magnus is canon divergent. Please talk to me first if you're interested in writing about anything that directly relates to events that occur in the television series, or the books!

SELECTIVITY

This blog is private, which means that I will only interact with mutuals. If I follow you, then I most definitely want to interact with you --- but if you don't follow me back after a week, I'll most likely unfollow. Absolutely no hard feelings at all; I'd just like to keep my dash uncluttered.

FOLLOWING / UNFOLLOWING

I will not always follow back. This doesn't mean that I dislike your blog: most likely, I just can't think of a way our characters could come together to interact. If you have a plot idea, however, please feel free to send me an ask about it!
There are very few reasons as to why I would break a mutual. Usually, such reasons include: posting nsfw content without tagging it appropriately multiple times, spreading needless hate or negativity, or a long period of unannounced inactivity (two months or more).
When following new blogs, I will not usually send in rule passwords, but will always read your rules before I follow you.

INTERACTIONS

I am not currently looking for exclusives, and I highly doubt I will ever look for exclusives who are from the Shadowhunters fandom. I will, however, be happy to consider multiverse exclusives, and do have a mains call posted, which you can find in my navigation.
I will rp with OCs, multiverse, animated characters, etc. If it’s a well-handled character, chances are that I’ll play. I won’t, however, interact with muses based on real people, or muses based on Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Sorry! it’s just a personal preference of mine.
Please don’t try and continue ask memes by sending in another ask or reblogging the ask post. I’ll definitely reply if you make a continuation post, but it’s frustrating to have to continually answer asks when you could easily transfer it into a thread.
I have the right to refuse or drop a thread for whatever reason, and so do you, but please make an effort to at least keep threads going for one/two replies.
Please don't message me and prompt me to reply to a thread! I'm very much on top of my blog, I have things drafted, and sometimes I just tend to prioritise some interactions over others, particularly if they've been properly plotted out. If you do try to guilt me into replying, I'll likely drop the thread. Sorry if this seems harsh! It's just happened too many times before.

I'm a sucker for all kinds of dynamics! I’d love to do platonic threads, hate threads, fight threads... If you can think of it, chances are that I'll want to write it. I also adore AUs, and I'll love you forever if you're interested in creating a new verse with me.
While I do love ships, I'd prefer it if we had a good friendship ooc before deciding to ship.
I’m not going to change Magnus' character for the sake of a ship, and your character shouldn’t do it for him, either.
I don’t intend to rp anything of a sexual nature on this blog! Making out etc is all fine, but I’ll probably do a fade to black before any naughty bits are touched. Most other variations of nsfw content are fine with me ( eg. violence, blood, gore ), but to be safe, it’d be easier for both of us if you discussed it with me first.
I don't automatically ship with Alecs, and it's not necessary to assume that Magnus is dating Alec in threads unless he mentions otherwise.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES: cat eyes, no belly button (warlock marks), multiple ear piercings. one thin scar on his chest (near his heart) & one matching (albeit slightly larger) scar on his back. both are vertical, pale, and raised.

PERSONALITY

MORAL ALIGNMENT: neutral good.

TEMPERAMENT: sanguine.
BRAIN LATERALISATION: right brain ( 60.4% ).
POSITIVE TRAITS: wise, driven, brave, selfless, confident, observant, perfectionist.
NEGATIVE TRAITS: stubborn, cynical, melodramatic, short - tempered.
HOBBIES: horticulture ( particularly when it comes to cultivating plants for his apothecary ), reading ( novels, comics, ancient texts etc ), party planning, exploring the globe. in the past, he has most notably tried painting, bonsai tree growing, and stamp collecting.
HABITS: taps at / fiddles with whatever objects he finds in his grasp when he's nervous or attempting to make a decision ( eg. books, a glass, his rings ). tends to physically toss away objects he is no longer interested in. uses an added flourish when performing spells. often lies about his age.

ABILITIES

THE SIGHT: being a particularly talented warlock, magnus has the ability to see through most downworld & shadowhunter glamours.
MAGIC: while his specialty is healing magic, magnus can in no way be considered to be anything less than masterly when it comes to all areas of magic --- whether it be his defensive, blue magic, or his powerful, orange spells.
in the aftermath of the deaths of his mother and step-father, magnus worked tirelessly in an attempt to hone and control his magic. there was never a safety net for him, no second chances --- and while others his age were experiencing regular childhoods, he pushed himself to become BETTER. reading, learning, working at controlling his volatile magic & being desperate to get his hands on as much knowledge as possible eventually transformed magnus into a highly proficient magic wielder.
his magic, however, is still similar an atomic bomb at times. if he uses his full strength, for example, it can get dangerously explosive if he’s not being careful, similarly to the display in 2x20 ( during which he literally blew up the demon from edom ) which is why he makes sure to practice concentration relatively often, similarly to what was depicted in 2x01. the extent of a warlock’s power is, obviously, inborn, but it’s quite clear that it requires work to unlock the full potential.
similarly, he undertakes combat training fairly often, too. warlocks aren’t quite as fast as, say, wolves or vampires so his reflexes are something that he has to actively work on. he is hardly useless without magic. it’s not something that he honed in a day ( the earthquakes in peru can attest to that ), he knows how to handle himself without it & can definitely hold his own in hand to hand combat.
BREWING ABILITIES: magnus is rather proficient when it comes to concocting potions in both liquid and powder forms.
HEAVENLY WEAPONS: as he is the son of a prince of hell --- or, a fallen angel, weapons of the nephilim ( namely: witchlight & seraph blades ) are known to react to his touch. instead of their usual white glow, however, they shine a bright red in magnus' grip. this is not an ability that he tends to make public.

BIOGRAPHY

as stated in my rules, my interpretation of magnus is composed of a healthy blend between his characterisation in the book series, the freeform television show, and my own headcanons. if you don’t like the way i write him for some reason, then please just unfollow me ( unless you have genuine & helpful constructive criticism ).

at this point in time, i don’t particularly want to write out a huge biography that details magnus’ 400 odd years of life, but if you’d like some insight into the character before we interact, you’re welcome to ask me about specific things. he also has a wiki page here! just take care if you decide to read it: his biography contains spoilers for the mortal instruments, the infernal devices, the dark artifices, and the bane chronicles.
